Elbert Tuganov, the father of Estonian animation, died on March 22, 2007. He was 87.
Tuganov was actually born in Baku, Azerbaijan (1920), and began his animation career in Germany. When Hitler took power, Tuganov returned to Estonia.
He joined Estonia’s state film studio, Tallinnfilm in 1946. For 11 years, Tuganov shot, drew and painted titles and credit sequences. During this time, Tuganov built an animation stand that would allow the studio to do frame-by-frame shooting. A visiting Moscow official was impressed by the new apparatus and suggested that Tuganov make animation films.

Starting 15. March we invite all those, who are interested in films, on every Thursday at 18.00 to the European Union Information and Cultural Centre to watch films that are mostly not distributed in Estonia. The films are brought to you in co-operation with the EU embassies in Estonia. The entrance is free.
In March the Representation of the European Commission celebrates with the film nights the Month of Francophonia in Estonia. In co-operation with the French Cultural Centre French films will be shown. The films have English subtitles.
On 22. March we show the film ”Betrayal” (”La trahison”) and on 29. March the film ”The Ax” (”Le couperet”).
There is room for at least 45 people in the hall of the Information and Cultural Centre (Rävala St. 4/Laikmaa St. 15). The entrance to the centre is on Laikmaa St.

The British Council’s next literature event takes place in Tallinn at Kloostri Ait on 22 March at 6:00 p.m.
Our visitor at the Literary Cafe will be John McRae, who invites us to think about the boundaries of standard English.
As modern writing moves away from the “centre” (wherever that was!) we find that English is no longer the single language it was thought to be. We will ask was it ever that one language? Is there any such thing as English? And who are the writers who are taking Englishes forward, breaking down the barriers of standard English today?
Not too many events like this around Tallinn, so I expect I’ll go…

Äripäev, Estonia’s business-related newspaper, was chosen as one of four (out of 351) of the world’s best-designed newspapers. Pretty cool, eh? (via NewsDesigner)

From the BBC: Prime minister wins Estonian poll.
With more than 99% of ballots counted, Andrus Ansip’s centre-right Reform Party had captured 27.8% of the votes…. Estonia’s fifth parliamentary polls since independence in 1991 were the world’s first to include online voting.
I’ve gotta say, it’s refreshing to be in a country that gives voters more than two options. I guess that’s the beauty of the parliamentary system. Anyway, AnTyx has the breakdown on who won how many seats.

Well, the election season in Estonia is almost over. And that means we won’t continue receiving a flood of campaign materials. This is just what we received over a couple days this week. A mere fraction of what we’ve received over the last month or so. And, of course, that doesn’t take into consideration all the commercials and other ads we’ve seen.

I think my favorite promotional item was this deck of cards. Blue for boys and pink for girls, apparently.

Love the tie:

Free Albums Galore, to my surprise, posted a link today to free album downloads by Russian/Estonian band Ne Zhdali. They’ve been around since 1987.
Ne Zhdali is a 6-pieces musical band basically located in Tallinn (Estonia). Their undefined style is a combination of different personalities, musical tastes and influences. Their music has amazed people for its enormous optimism in the time of apocalypses… On stage they are bursting with wild energy exploring their physical and mental capacities.
I’m on my way to download…
