estonian advertising

Here’s an ad you’d never see in the US! Not just because it doesn’t make sense from the design and selling perspectives, but because of liability. I can see the headline: “Man slices off finger with power tool while drinking out of flask.” The week he returns from the hospital, he sees the ad on the kitchen table and the little light bulb goes on…

  2. Hi Rebecca! Thanks for leaving a comment and welcome to Tallinn. As you can probably tell from posters around town and all the bustling to and fro, there’s a lot to do during Spring here. illumineerima isn’t nearly the resource (or just plain blog) that I’d like it to be, but I’m glad you’ve found it amusing (that’s a compliment, right?).

You’d think Estonian language classes would be easy to find in Estonia, but they’re not. There are a number of companies that supposedly offer classes, but every time I’ve signed up, they’ve canceled the class due to lack of interest. So, I went the route that most foreigners seem to take: private lessons. My teacher’s name is Maire Aarsalu and her email address is maireaarsalu@hot.ee. She’s quite affordable (not to mention friendlier than your average Estonian). I meet with her once per week for two hours. It’s not really enough, but work (and, I admit, some play) limits my time for study. Tallinn University offers a summer program (http://www.tlu.ee/?LangID=2&CatID=2004), and they may have classes during the regular academic year. I didn’t bother looking into those myself because I knew such courses wouldn’t fit my schedule.
