I'll be in Italy for the first two weeks of July, and we considered going to Barcelona, too, but then decided to focus on Italian culture. Influences of Gaudi everywhere is absolutely amazing. I do not know what it is, but Barcelona has it. My favorite town of all the places I have ever been to, after Tartu.
